GLASGOW CELEBRATES ARMED FORCES DAY
GlasgowÕs Lord Provost Sadie Docherty, in her role as Lord Lieutenant, led the cityÕs Armed Forces Day celebrations in George Square on Saturday, 29th June.
She took the salute at the march past when she was joined by senior representatives of all the services: Rear Admiral Chris Hockley, Royal Navy; Brigadier Andy Williams representing the Army; and Squadron Leader Archie McCallum, Royal Air Force; as well as MSPs including Joanne Lamont and Ruth Davidson.
Lord Lieutenant Sadie Docherty said: ÒIt is important that our serving military and our veterans know they have the support of this city and the whole of Britain. A highlight for me, as well as the march past and the music of the Royal Marines Band Scotland, is the opportunity to meet veterans and servicemen and women.
ÒAnd of course, next year we are recognising the contribution of the Royal Marines who celebrate their 350th anniversary in 2014 by awarding them the Freedom of the City.
ÒGlasgow will also lead a national event to mark the beginning of the First World War, which will include a special service at Glasgow Cathedral.Ó
Rear Admiral Hockley said: ÒI am honoured to have been invited by Glasgow City Council as the senior Armed Forces representative for this service of recognition.
ÒThe Armed Forces Day service is a particularly special occasion for all our servicemen and women, full time and reserve, serving or retired, as it is an event organised by communities to show support for our sailors, marines, soldiers and airmen and the work which they do on behalf of our country around the world.
ÒWe appreciate the honour which Glasgow has bestowed on us with this special service and continue to thank the public for their unstinting and fond support.Ó
The Royal Marines Band Scotland led the parade followed by serving Royal Navy, Army and RAF personnel, as well as cadets from all three services and veterans.
