2020 recognition of the 80th Anniversary of the LRDG formation

During 2020 we will be commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the formation of the LRDG with some special events (Still in planning at moment).

Watch this space and please support our efforts when they are launched, thank you.

Exciting New Initiatives and Projects on the Horizon

The team are busily working upon some new projects, which will be revealed very soon, which will involve new community members, our own established members and many others.  The main projects will fall under our ‘Rust & Restoration’ criteria and will open up our capabilities, increase our footprint and widen our involvement with other groups.  Watch This Space!

Likewise we identify a need to use more of our Social Media capability, which, due to us being very busy has been on back burner, much to our shame.  As part of this we would like to recruit a web and social media guru into our ranks as the next few months will be more fast paced and exciting, carrying out and providing services that no one else in Scotland is doing at present.

Education, Community Engagement, Major and Minor projects, planned and one-off events are all part of our next phase of planning.

New Garage and Working Museum on Horizon

New Horizons

We have been investigating the possibility of a new Garage and Museum space in the Paisley Area. This is an Asset Transfer from Renfrewshire Council and we are looking at partnerships and exciting new areas for us to explore and offer the Community. More to Follow……

Addition to our Fleet

We have now purchased 2 Chevy 30cwts to be restored and made into a LRDG patrol vehicle and a Stores/support vehicle in due course.  At moment we are busy researching similar vehicles and looking at areas we need to restore or fabricate.  Likewise we will be making or purchasing ancillary items to ‘dress’ the vehicle as it would have been on patrol in the desert.

2015-2017 Heritage Lottery Fund Project

The Western Desert Recce Group are proud to announce that they will be developing and delivering a WW1 Heritage Project with the aid of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The project centres around the troops and vehicles of the Light Car Patrol (LCP) who operated in the western desert from 1916-1919.  Their primary vehicle was the Model T Ford which was stripped of all body panels and non-essential equipment then ‘customised’ to carry troops, equipment and machine guns.  Their main objective was to act as Recce troops for the western desert army and also as a mobile weapon platform for the infantry and protective force for logisitic and other arms of service.

The LCP was the fore-runner to the WW2 Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) and it was from the use of the Model T during the WW1 conflict and between the wars that Ralph Bagnold, the founder of the LRDG, gained valuable information and experience that enabled him to help form the LRDG in such a tight timescale during 1940 in Cairo.

Supreme Champion of Champions Trophy!

There used to be a well-used moan amongst us military vehicle types that come competition time our olive drab military vehicles would never stand a chance when placed in direct competition against all things that are very shiny.
